How an eclipse works

Diagram of a solar eclipse: the Moon casts its umbra and penumbra onto the Earth SUN MOON UMBRA PENUMBRA EARTH

When the Moon slips exactly between the Sun and Earth, its dark inner shadow — the umbra — traces a narrow path. Stand inside it and the Sun vanishes. Stand in the fainter penumbra and you see only a partial bite.

The phases of totality

A total solar eclipse unfolds over two hours — but the magic, totality, lasts only seconds to a few minutes.

The four kinds of eclipse

Total Solar
The Moon fully hides the Sun; the corona blazes out. Day turns to night on a path ~150 km wide.
Annular Solar
The Moon is too far to cover the Sun fully. A brilliant "ring of fire" rims the lunar disc.
Total Lunar
Earth's shadow swallows the Moon, which glows blood-red. Totality can last up to 1h 47min.
Partial Lunar
Only part of the Moon enters Earth's umbra — a dark bite, visible to the naked eye.
