Solar Eclipse 2027

Updated: September 14, 2026

Two solar eclipses in 2027, and both are headline events: a ring of fire over Patagonia on February 6, and on August 2 the longest total solar eclipse of the century — 6 min 23 s of darkness over Egypt, with totality also crossing southern Spain and North Africa.

Short answer
There are two solar eclipses in 2027: an annular eclipse on February 6, 2027 (greatest eclipse 16:00 UTC, up to 7 min 51 s of ring of fire over southern Chile and Argentina), and a total eclipse on August 2, 2027 (greatest eclipse 10:07 UTC, up to 6 min 23 s of totality near Luxor, Egypt — the longest of the 21st century), with the path of totality crossing southern Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

Times are the moment of greatest eclipse in UTC (NASA GSFC). Both events need ISO 12312-2 eclipse glasses for every partial phase; only the totality of August 2 can be watched with the naked eye, and only from inside the path.

Annular solar eclipse — February 6, 2027

An annular eclipse: the Moon is slightly too far from Earth to cover the Sun completely, so at maximum a brilliant ring of fire remains — up to 7 minutes 51 seconds of annularity, one of the longest of the decade. Greatest eclipse is at 16:00 UTC (magnitude 0.928).

Path of annularity: southern Chile and southern Argentina (Patagonia, in the afternoon — 13:00 local), then across the South Atlantic to West Africa near sunset. Partial phases: most of South America, Antarctica, and western and southern Africa. Not visible from Europe, North America or Asia.

Because the Sun is never fully covered, glasses stay on for the entire eclipse, ring included. A solar filter is also mandatory on any camera, binoculars or telescope.

Total solar eclipse — August 2, 2027

The eclipse of the century. Totality lasts up to 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt — the longest total solar eclipse visible from land between 1991 and 2114. Greatest eclipse is at 10:07 UTC (magnitude 1.079). The Moon's shadow makes landfall at the Strait of Gibraltar, sweeps across southern Spain (Cádiz, Málaga, Ceuta and Melilla), then Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia.

Partial phases are visible across all of Africa, Europe, the Middle East and western and southern Asia — from London (a small bite) to Madrid (deep partial), Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Nairobi and Mumbai. Greatest eclipse at 10:07 UTC is 12:07 CEST in Spain · 13:07 EEST in Egypt · 11:07 BST in London.

How to watch a solar eclipse safely

Every partial phase — and the whole of an annular eclipse — must be watched through ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or a solar filter. Sunglasses, smoked glass, exposed film and phone screens are not safe. The only moment you may look with the naked eye is totality on August 2, from inside the path, while the Sun is fully covered; glasses go back on the instant the first bright bead reappears. FAQ — Solar eclipse 2027

How many solar eclipses are there in 2027?
Two: an annular solar eclipse on February 6, 2027 (ring of fire over southern Chile and Argentina) and a total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 over southern Spain, North Africa and Egypt.
Why is the August 2, 2027 eclipse so special?
Its totality lasts up to 6 minutes 23 seconds near Luxor, Egypt — the longest total solar eclipse visible from land in the 21st century. Nothing longer comes until 2114.
Where is the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 visible?
The path of totality crosses the Strait of Gibraltar, southern Spain (Cádiz, Málaga, Ceuta), Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt (Luxor), Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia. Partial phases are visible across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and western and southern Asia.
Where is the annular eclipse of February 6, 2027 visible?
The ring of fire (up to 7 min 51 s) crosses southern Chile and Argentina and the South Atlantic before reaching West Africa. Partial phases cover most of South America, Antarctica and western and southern Africa.
Can I watch the 2027 solar eclipses without glasses?
No. Both require ISO 12312-2 solar viewers for every phase except the brief totality on August 2, from inside the path, when the Sun is completely covered. During the annular eclipse the Sun is never fully hidden, so glasses stay on the whole time.
What time is the eclipse of August 2, 2027 in Spain?
Greatest eclipse (the global maximum, over Egypt) is at 10:07 UTC = 12:07 CEST. Totality reaches southern Spain earlier in the track, late in the morning local time; exact contact times for each city are in the full 2027 guide.

Where to get certified glasses

Look for the ISO 12312-2 (and CE) marking — both the Helioclipse multi-pack (about €9) and the Medical king pack with two smartphone photo filters (about €9) carry it. Buy early: they sell out as the date nears.
